Christmas 2010 through 2011

Reply from Aidah Namubiru, Sounds of Hope Youth Group, Uganda

Dear Juliane,

The closeness of my family is my number pride because we enjoy great time. How is Shannon? Are you finding ninth class interesting? How are the teachers? Athletic people like you are very rare mostly ladies. I believe you so much admired and you college is proud of you all. Detailed learning has started in the new class and we are so far finding it hard. We believe we shall pick with time.

Take care,

Aidah

Dear Aidah,

My best friend Shannon is doing well thank you for your concern. I hope you are doing good as well! I am very much enjoying ninth grade it is very interesting. All of my teachers are nice and intelligent people. In Uganda finding an athletic lady may be rare, but here in America it is very common. There are many sports made for just women to play. As you are further educated what do you dream of becoming? Good luck with everything and I hope all goes well. Write back soon!

Julianne

Correspondence March 2010 through December 2010

My name is Aidah Namubiru. I am 13 years old and a member of the Sounds of Hope youth program in Uganda. I live at home with my parents, four sisters and three brothers and many chickens. We have a big family. I am lucky - even though our family is big, I have my own room.

Christian teens around the world share their faith

My chores include taking care of the chickens, cooking, washing utensils and clothes. I love music and a favorite song is: Abazadde Mumazze Okutuka (Parents You Have Arrived). I am in the 7th grade but I do not have to walk to school as school is five miles away. I am fortunate to have a ride. I attend church regularly with my family and want to grow up to be a teacher.

" Hi Aidah ... I'm Julianne and I am also 13 but I am in the 8th grade. I also love listening to music! I want to be a Social Studies teacher. I'm interested in soccer and lacrosse. I have two siblings, a sister and one brother.

My favorite thing about youth group is being with my friends. We meet every Sunday night and I have gotten really close to them. I also like our Olympics competition, which we have each Spring (like right now!). We do athletic events and have fun.

I attend church regularly with my mother and my favorite hymn is 'Here I am, Lord'."

By the way, I am happy you want to be a teacher. Even though you have a hard life, keep pushing through; it will all work out."

Hello Julianne Murray,

Thanks so much for being my friend.

My dad is Abdul and my mom Sofia. But my mom died and I only have my dad. My dad is a security officer. Being with other people gives happiness in my life.

My best subjects are Mathematics, science and English.

I hope to hear from you again.

Comment and Challenge from Lindsay Ullmann, United Kingdom

Hi ... my name is Lindsay Ullmann. I started to write poetry when I was your age and it helped me to learn more about myself as a person. I grew to understand that I had to search to just find myself . I am in my 20's and now am a professional songwriter and singer. So if we turn our thoughts around into something positive we can accomplish almost anything - through creativity and spirituality.

Aidah and Julianne, do you feel that you have had a wake up call in life like I had through poetry, when I was your age? If so, would you care to share? Would you agree that creativity and spirituality can help us and also those around us?

Dear Adiah,

I'm very happy to be your friend; I hope we can continue to stay in touch. I would like to know more about you and I want you to ask questions about me. My family is very large, I have many cousins(14) and I am very close with all. I see most of my cousins once a week. Do you have any other family, such as cousins? I also want to know about your friends. Adiah, what are their names and their personalities like, maybe even what you guys do for fun. This year I will be graduating from 8th grade and going into High School. In four more years, I will go to college.

Our youth group takes some time off in the summer with only a mountain hike scheduled for August 7th. Then we start our weekly Sunday night meetings in September.
